After drywall wallboards are hung,seams, nail heads and screws need to be taped off. Once the sheets are secured to the wall studs or ceiling joists correctly, the seams between drywall sheets are concealed using joint tape and several layers of joint compound; sometimes called "mud". Joint compound or vinyl spackling is also known as “mud”. Commonly, mud is first applied and then the seams are taped over. J & R Custom Walls is an expert at mud application.

The compound air dries then typically sanded smooth before painting. For a better finish, the entire wall may be given a skim coat, a very thin layer of finishing compound, to minimize the visual differences between the paper and mudded areas after painting. Types of drywall tape include vinyl, paper and mesh.

A taping knife or joint knife are used to smooth out the surface areas for a seamless smooth finish primed for a custom texture. Drywall tape bonds with the drywall’s paper surface. Properly finished, the taped joint will not be visible through paint.
